Frequently asked questions about Code Breaker
Can a color appear more than once in the code?
At the Easy and Intermediate levels, never: each color appears at most once in the code. At the Hard level, a color can appear up to 2 times, and up to 3 times at the Extreme level. Your guesses, however, can repeat a color at every level.
What does an empty hint slot mean?
One peg in your guess earned neither "correct position" nor "wrong position". Either its color is not in the code, or the code contains fewer pegs of that color than your guess: each peg in the code is counted only once. The hints never tell you which peg it is.
Can you submit an incomplete row?
Yes, as soon as one peg is placed, except on the last row, which must be complete. An empty space earns no hint, and an incomplete row cannot win. It uses up a row, just like a complete guess.
How many secret codes are possible?
Easy: 60 codes; Intermediate: 360; Hard: 14,070; Extreme: 113,610. These numbers take into account the colors of the level and the maximum number of repeats allowed in the code. They are calculated from the app's engine, then recalculated by a second, independent program.
How does Last Chance mode work?
All rows except the last are already filled with randomly drawn guesses, along with their real hints. You have only one guess, on a complete row: you must deduce the code from these rows. In the example on the site, at the Intermediate level, only one code remains possible.
How does Daily mode work?
Each day offers 25 games, from Easy to Extreme level, in Classic and Last Chance. The day's codes are drawn from the device's date. The app keeps the last 60 days: you can view a past day, but you can't replay it.
Does Timed mode impose a time limit?
No. You play a series of 5, 10 or 20 games at the chosen level, and the app measures the total time of the series. No game is interrupted by the clock.
What does the Random Challenge offer?
A game whose format is drawn at random: 4 to 6 pegs, 5 to 7 colors and 8 to 20 rows. When there are more pegs than colors, the code necessarily repeats colors; otherwise, repeats are sometimes allowed.
